Lodi�s Tomb
LOCATION: Inside Lodi Gardens, New Delhi.
The Lodi Gardens are well kept gardens. In the midst of these famed gardens are the tombs of Sayyed and Lodi rulers. History says that the tombs are remnants of another city that was to be built in Delhi. Mohammed Shah�s tomb built in 1450 is a prototype for the Mughal style tomb of Humayun, a design that would eventually develop into the Taj Mahal.
Mubarak Shah�s Tomb
LOCATION: Kotla Mubarakpur, New Delhi.
Originally an octagonal compound wall enclosed this tomb with two gates on the south and the west. But now, only the southern gate and a mosque in the west remain. The main entrance to its octagonal chamber is from south with arched openings, which are found everywhere except in the west as a minaret stands there. It is surrounded by a verandah with three openings on each side.
The tomb�s broad low dome rises from a 16 sided battlemented drum with a turret on each corner and is crowned by a lantern. Over the roof, in the middle of each side stands a chhatri. The ceiling of dome is ornamented with incised and coloured bands of plaster, with triple band of inscriptions from Koran at the base of the dome. Mubarak Shah Sayyed, the second ruler of Sayyed dynasty died in 1434. Likely to be have been built soon after, with its wide proportions on he grounds, low domes, buttresses and chhatris, the tomb looks a little stunted but is a good example of octagonal Sayyed tombs which retained their popularity in the Lodi and even the Mughal times.
Najaf Khan�s Tomb
LOCATION: Opposite Safdurjung Airport, New Delhi.
Opposite the Safdurjung Airport, on the Delhi � Meharauli road is the Najaf Khan�s tomb. It has large gardens and a gateway on the east which is in ruins. The mausoleum stands in the centre of the enclosure and consists of a raised platform of red sand stone and two inscribed marble cenotaphs one Najaf Khan�s and the other of his daughter, Fatima. The real graves are in one of the two chambers of the platform. Najaf khan was related to the Sufi kings of Persia and came with his sister to India and later entered the services of Shah Alam �III. He died in 1782 and hi daughter died in 1820.
Sultan Ghari�s Tomb
LOCATION: 8 Kilometers south west of Qutab Minar on Meharauli - Palam Road.
Sultan Ghari�s tomb is the first example of a monumental Muslim tomb in India apart from few pre � Sultanate monuments in the Kutch district of Gujarat. From an inscription on its main gateway we learn that it was built in 1231 A.D. by Iltutmish over the remains of his eldest son and heir apparent, prince Nasir �ud � din Mahmud.
Shaikh Ala � ud �din�s tomb
LOCATION: Malviya Nagar, New Delhi.
Not far from the main road of Malviya Nagar to Chirag Dilli, lies the square domed tomb of Shaikh Ala � ud � din Shakarganj. Although he built his own tomb in 1507, he died in 1542, as written on the inscription on its doorway. The tomb chamber rests on 12 columns. The dome rises form the 16 sided drum. The tomb is quite decorative with incised and coloured plaster medallions on the spandrels of arches and Merlin designs on the Para bets of the dome.
Shaikh Yusuf Qattal�s Tomb
LOCATION: Malviya Nagar, near village Khirki, New Delhi.
Village Khirki lies in the south of Malviya Nagar. About 300 meters North West of the village is a small but attractive tomb of Shaikh Yusuf Qattal, a disciple of Qazi Jalal ud � din of Lahore. He died in about 1527, after which the tomb was built. This tomb too rests on 12 pillars and other details similar to the tomb of Shaikh Ala ud � din. There are remains of mosque nearby and several graves too.
